The Northampton Community Arts Trust acquired 33 Hawley in 2017 as part of the trust’s mission to preserve affordable space for creative work. The building is occupied and collaboratively managed by three independent nonprofits. Centerbrook and Nextstage were asked to work with these groups to envision the largest (and only remaining space that has not been rehabbed) into a Workshop / Theater in which artists can experiment and collaborate with other artists and the public. We developed a first phase including a sprung floor, lighting, mechanical and life safety systems, motorized window shades for daylight control, structural framework, seating, and modest back of house support. The full build-out adds catwalks, public galleries, telescopic seating, and complete backstage spaces.
