In fall of 2017 category 5 hurricanes Irma and Maria hit St. Thomas, causing extensive damage to the island and to the Reichhold Center in particular. The structure of the stage house was extensively damaged by high winds and water infiltration throughout the building. A roll-up door closing off the stage was blown-in and the roof extensively damaged. The university, with funding from FEMA, is re-building the facility to return it to use, and updating the specialty equipment to modern standards. Nextstage Design, working closely with Acentech acousticians and AV designers, is designing a new stage floor, new counterweight rigging system, stage draperies and a state-of-the-art stage lighting system to accommodate film screenings and musical performances. All systems are designed to resist the hot, humid, salt-laden atmosphere, including protective covers for all power and control receptacles.
